In support of the Non-dad

A view from a non-father. Now I think that fathers get a bad press at the moment, being often portrayed as bumbling, feckless or just plain nasty and violent. But what of the non-father? Those who by accident or design have never fathered a child, or who have, but something bad happened? Does anyone ever hear about or from them?
I suspect that it is less of an issue socially than it is for non mothers; in this society women are gauged by their ability to raise a child and men by their career success. So perhaps the equivalent would be men who have had happy and satisfying lives without becoming CEOs or wealthy. But there is still a certain stepping away when you as a man reveal you do not have kids. Men who have children are quick to reassure people – especially women – that this is indeed the case. Their profile pix on social media sites show them with happy smiling wife ‘n’ kids.
But without wanting to take anything away from these men I think we need to be able to celebrate the other achievements of childless men. Of being a valid part of society. Of helping within their own families and within society, of being creative and passionate as well.
